Troop 290 News

Here are some newsworthy items going on at Troop 290:

Florida Sea Base Trip

First Class Scout Chad Criss and Star Scout Arnold Andrade left on Sunday, July 27, 2008, to attend a seven day trip to the Florida Sea Base Out Island Adventure. Their stay will include deep sea fishing, snorkeling, kayaking and shark fishing on Big Munson Island, among other activities. These boys will be a part of a memorable tropical island experience of a lifetime.

Summer Camp

Six scouts from Troop 290 attended summer camp at Woodruff Scout Reserve located in the Blue Ridge Mountains. They were greeted by fellow scouts Jonathan Ingram and Brian Oliver who were there all summer as paid staff teaching Communications and Personal Fitness. The young men received numerous merit badges in different skills and Chad Criss was recognized at the closing ceremony for swimming and lifesaving. This summer camp trip was once again a true success.

West Atlanta District Awards Banquet

Troop 290 hosted the annual West Atlanta District Awards Banquet in June, 2008. At this banquet many committee members were recognized for their service to the West Atlanta Boy Scouts. Among them Dorothy J. Hudson was recognized for her work with the District. Our troop was recognized as Troop of the Year and Joseph Ingram, Sr. was recognized as Scoutmaster of the Year. Robert J. Criss was Master of Ceremony and addressed the gathering on what it meant to be a scout.

Kickoff the New Season

We will be starting this season with a barbeque cookout for family, scouts and friends on Saturday August 23, 2008, at the Silver Creek Ranch Swimming pool and Sweetwater Creek State Park. The boys will be swimming and hiking the Sweetwater Creek Red History Trail and visiting the museum.

In October we will attend our first camping trip of the new season, The OA/ Trailblazer Adventure Camp, where the boys will be testing their skills in Orienteering, Shotgun Shooting, Rifle Shooting and Archery.
